My primary concern is the lack of involvement of our residents. Every week decisions that will affect Salida for a long time to come are made by the City Council. Even when the Council’s Chamber is packed less than 1% of our voters are present. I am aware of the large group of people who watch the meetings on Channel 10 and find their effort in keeping tuned in with what the city is doing laudable. However, it is not being involved. If something is going on or if you see a need that the city is not fulfilling, call your city council representative. If they are unavailable or you feel you need to offer further input call the Mayor. They can only represent you if you let them know what you think.
Part of being heard is to have the facts and to make decisions based upon these facts. It is not always easy to find the information necessary for a voter to make a logical decision. Again, call your councilors and ask them for the sources you can use to be informed. Knee-jerk, uninformed opinions based solely on emotion are not helpful to the Council when it is making a difficult decision.
I ask for your involvement in your city government. Remember that is not just your representatives and city employees who are “The City”, it is you, the citizen of Salida. If you do not pay attention, know the facts, and let people know what you are thinking, you are tacitly approving whatever occurs.
Pay attention. Get involved. Give feedback. Lend a hand in making Salida what we want it to be.
