Since 1991, the City of Salida and SPOT have created 11+ miles of trails in and around the city. A Master Trails Plan for Chaffee County is adopted and trail extensions are in progress throughout the area.
In the past years, SPOT has worked with Chaffee County, the City of Salida, the Towns of Buena Vista and Poncha Springs, and various public and private agencies on projects worth more than $1,000,000.
Completed SPOT Projects:
Salida Trail System: SPOT is an active partner with the County and local municipalities in creating safe, scenic, historic and recreational non-motorized transportation corridors.
Alpine Park Playground Equipment: Outdated, unsafe, and non-handicapped-accessible playground equipment in Salida’s popular family park was replaced with a new playground complex designed for children of all ages and abilities. The project was accomplished with a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado, City of Salida support and local donations.
Monarch Spur Park: Salida’s demonstration garden for native plant landscaping and water conservation, and the first pocket park on the Salida Trail system, was constructed in 1990 with support from the City of Salida and Great Outdoors Colorado. Phase II, including 100+ plant labels and a kiosk with interpretive signs, was completed in 2008 with support from Colorado DOW, Terra Foundation, GARNA, and other donors.
Hutchinson Homestead Museum and Cultural Center: SPOT and the Hutchinson family are working together to preserve the historic homestead and out buildings as a Heritage Ranching Museum. In 1873, the Carpenter Gothic style homestead was the first house in the valley built with milled lumber and its exterior was fully restored last year with grants from the Colorado State Historical Fund. Six generations of Hutchinsons have lived here and forged the ranching chapter of history in the valley. Several more phases of restoration work remain and more local funds and grants will be needed to do the preservation work.
Disc Golf Course: SPOT worked with the local Frisbee (Disc) Golf Club through a Great Outdoors Colorado grant to build an eighteen hole Disc Golf Course. The course is located in South Park, a park owned by the town of Poncha Springs. The project received a Starburst Award for exceptional use of GOCO funds. The course is very popular with locals and tourists.
The board members of this all-volunteer organization have diverse interests and an extensive background in obtaining and administering various kinds of grants. SPOT is an incubator for projects within its areas of interest, providing expertise and support for others to achieve their dreams. SPOT is a 501 [c] 3 non-profit corporation registered with the State of Colorado.
