Salida Concerts Inc. announced it plans to give scholarships again this year to deserving music students who will graduate high school this year in Chaffee County, or to students from Chaffee County already studying music in college.
Two $1000 ENCORE scholarships are available, the same number as last year.
Applications for the scholarships have been distributed to high school counselors in Chaffee County and the application is posted for downloading from the website, SalidaAspenConcerts.org. Applications are being accepted now through the deadline May 1.
Students must fill out the application and write about their musical activities and interests in a one-page essay and submit two references, one of which could be their music teacher. Proof of graduation from high school or home school in Chaffee County, or enrollment in an institution of higher learning, also is required.
Salida Concerts Inc. started the scholarship program ten years ago to encourage talented students to pursue musical careers. Scholarships are funded out of the total charitable contributions and advertising dollars raised each year to produce the Salida Aspen Concerts series in Salida and Buena Vista.
Also, Salida Concerts Inc. announced it would continue its longstanding policy of admitting students free to its concerts. The average number of free tickets issued to students has been about 10 per concert over the past several years.
The 33rd Salida Aspen Concerts season begins Saturday, June 27 and runs each week through the first week in August with five concerts in Held Auditorium, Salida High School and one concert July 18 at Valley Fellowship Church, Buena Vista.
The artists and chamber music ensembles selected to perform in Salida are being chosen now in Aspen and will be announced later. Since its inception in the summer of 1978 the Salida Aspen Concerts series has partnered with the world famous Aspen Music Festival and School where internationally acclaimed artists come to teach and perform with rising stars in their field.
