DVS Skate Showdown at FIBArk

showdown-09-2097With punk rock blaring from underneath plastic trash bags, contestants milled about the Salida Skatepark as the ten-year-old event was put on hold for five hours because of rain. But, in pure Colorado fashion, the clouds pushed on in the blink of an eye and blue sky dominated, making for a beautiful evening of skating.

In the pro category, Alex Brunelle from Colorado Springs took home top honors on Saturday when he successfully beat out Chris Patton as well as local favorites Michael DeBuano, Derik Scott and Tony Marle with what some visitors saw as a questionable victory stolen from the locals. In the amateur class, super-grom Stone Bennet from Albuquerque killed. For the beginners, it was Shea Donavan in what may likely be his last beginner entry in a skate event, beating out Josh Scott in a dual that has been brewing all spring.  Adam and the Sideways Group put on another stellar event in their tenth year as hosts for this wonderfully aggressive aspect of FIBArk. As usual, the prizes were spilling freely as the park attendees scattered quickly into the night.

Check out these pics I shot during the semis and final jam. Also, check out last week’s event in Colorado Springs.
