Armstrong wins Leadville 100; Wiens second

Despite riding on a flat tire, Lance Armstrong finished the Leadville 100 today in a 6 hours 28 minutes, demolishing the previous course record of 6:45 set by Gunnison resident Dave Wiens in 2008. Wiens finished second behind Armstrong in 6:57.

Matt Shriver of Durango finished in third place overall, at 7:09. Rebecca Rusch of Ketchum, Idaho, finished first in the women’s division at 8:14.

Read more about the race at Cycling News, the Denver Post or perhaps the best of the three by the Associated Press.

Update: Unofficial race results have been posted. Congrats to Salida locals Craig Nelson and Shawn Gillis and BV riders James Orlet, David Bott, Steve Barnes and Andrew Miller.

  1. Well done Lance, but to me, Wiens is still the hero of this race.

  2. I hear ya, but strip away the Lanceness …and just consider the bike race as a few guys going for it, and we see that Lance beat him by a half hour on a flat? Goodness gracious. Call me a Frenchy, but for years I’ve wanted to dislike Lance, and he makes it really hard.
