Greetings from the Salida Police Department. Winter is right around the corner and we have some fresh powder on the ground to prove it.
Our department certainly was busy during the summer months and we are glad to say it went smoothly with all of the events. Currently we are preparing for our move to our new facility in the old hospital building. We are very excited about the move and having a lot more room for our police facility.
I have 2 topics I would like to talk about in this issue, one being animal licensing and rules. The 2nd being “reporting crimes and the importance”. With the recent car break ins and stolen cars it has raised questions about why do we need to report.
The City has requirements to license your dogs and cats under City code 7-8-180. This requires owners of dogs and cats to register their pets with the City- if you live with in the City limits. The purpose behind this code is to protect the welfare of the animals and the public as well. The license is a 1 time registration and fee. By registering your pet, this helps us if your animal were to get lost and we find it we would be able to locate the owner. The current cost for licensing your pet is $7.50 for a spayed/neutered pet or $15.00 if not altered.
All of the animal regulations under the City code are in place to mainly protect the animal as well as the public. I know in our department we spend a good deal of time working on animal concerns, our priority is to make sure the animals are properly treated and the public is safe from vicious animals. Currently we have a mandatory leash law in Salida and some people question the need. There is a definite need as this is the only way you can control your pet while you are out in the public. This keeps your pet safe from other animals and traffic. So take the time to register your pet and make sure you keep up on your pet’s vaccination shots.
My 2nd topic involves reporting of crimes. Recently there were a number of car break ins and thefts from the vehicle. A good number of the people call in to report what happened and items stolen. Over the years we have discovered in this particular type of crime only about half of the victims call in to make a report. Reasons vary on why people do, usually because they did not lock their car, but it is important to get with us and let us make reports. The problems with this are we do not get an accurate account of the crime spree, property that is eventually recovered can not be returned to its owner because it was never reported.
With this being said I ask anyone who feels they have been the victim of any crime or have information concerning the crime, Please report to us. Your report could be the one that helps solve the case. We are always glad to take any information. Anyone with questions, comments or concerns about these issues or others, please contact us.
Thank You, Chief Terry Clark
