About 50 residents, most from Buena Vista, gathered at the Barbara Whipple bridge at the river park in Buena Vista to take photos and videos to submit to 350.org as part of yesterday’s International Day of Climate Action. Yesterday’s event in Buena Vista was among more than 5,200 held in 181 countries.
Founded by environmental activist Bill McKibben, 350.org was created to unite concerned citizens in sending a message to world leaders who will meet in Copenhagen next month to discuss international climate change protocols. Three hundred fifty is the maximum number of parts per billion of carbon dioxide the atmosphere can sustain without worsening global warming, according to NASA scientists. The level is currently 390. McKibben created 350.org to call attention to individuals and world leaders of the pressing need to reverse global warming.
After yesterday’s photo opp, the staff of Colorado Kayak Supply, who coordinated and hosted the event, distributed prizes for kids and adults as donated by CKS, the Trailhead, NRS and Keen.
