trail workers getting down to business
A very large turnout of volunteers on Saturday morning made finishing the trail link between the railroad corridor across the front of Tenderfoot Hill a reality.
Completing this strategic trail, which will allow users of the Arkansas Hills Trail System to enter via singletrack from an intersection with the Sand Dunes Trail just east of the F Street Bridge, was an ambitious goal. The trail terminates at the kiosk at the parking lot at Spiral Drive, directly across the parking area from the Lil’ Rattler trailhead. Some very difficult trail building needed to be accomplished, crossing rock outcroppings and digging wide bench in rocky and dusty dirt, but the volunteers were up to the task!
Many thanks to our volunteers, and to core members of Salida Mountain Trails who put in many long hours, some working multiple days every week. The project was started in late May of this year. Thanks to the contributions of many hands and backs, it was completed in roughly 4 and one half months.
Take a walk or a bike ride, and check out this new trail. Clearly it is a strategic link, but it is also a beautifully built trail, and it offers some stunning views of Salida and our valley ringed with mountains.

Too cool for words. Many thanks to all the folks who worked on this — Salida is a better place because of you and your efforts.

My husband and I hiked the new trail yesterday and it was amazing. Making that beautiful area so accessible is a great gift to our community. And a gift that is being well received. We were with dozens of others enjoying your present. Thank you!!!
…It’s incredible! I may sound like a broken record to some, but..if you haven’t ridden or hiked these trails, you will be blown away. Thanks to SMT for this amazing effort.
Thank you SMT!!! The Thursday crew was a great addition for this most recent effort. They deserve special thanks for the enormous amount of rocks they moved to make this trail happen.
Great work SMT!!!
Thank you so much to all of the wonderful people who made SMT happen. The trails are awesome!
