I spoke with Cherry De Vil down at Ms. Yolo’s Speak Easy Saturday night, or was it Sunday morning? This dame had the sass of a firetruck full o’ monkeys late for a Poncha fire, and lemme tell ya gents, it was smokin’ hot in there. After tossing back a couple shots of what was ailin’ us, we chatted about the show and ..the ladies. A little later Tim Brown, their photographer and body guard dropped by my apartment for a little visit. Now, I won’t say he roughed me up because “Mr, Brown is a professional.” But, he asked me, very nicely, to mention that these are high class ladies and professional dancers, and if you think otherwise you’ll have to talk ta him about it.
What is this Burlesque show all about?
This show is hopefully going to just shake things up a bit. There are so many beautiful women in this valley that want to break out of their shells and the burlesque show and calendar are meant to give them all an opportunity to express themselves.
The Burlesque show isn’t meant to be a money maker, rather an inexpensive form of entertainment that isn’t offered in Salida.
This event will showcase local talent in a way Salida hasn’t experienced since the Red Light District was up and running. Salida embraces an art scene, and this show will add another element.
Is there a Burlesque history here in Salida?
We know there was a thriving Red Light District in the early 20th century. The Palace Hotel and Laura Evans are infamous historic names. (Note: our history on this topic in Salida is limited)
Where did the Starlettes come from? Who is behind it?
Kindlelyn Bustos lived the Rockabilly scene for many years. After she moved to Salida in 2006, she was looking for a way to inspire others in Salida to embrace past style and fashion. From a very young age, she was entriged by Pin-Up art and loved styling herself to fit the part. In 2007, she convinced a group of women to dress as vintage swimwear models, dubbing them the Salida Starlettes. With help from friends and volunteers, Kindlelyn was able to create the 2009 calendar. The overwhelming response set the wheels in motion to creating a bigger and better 2010 calendar.
The 2010 Salida Starlettes started practicing their burlesque show about 8 months ago. We self-choreographed most songs, including chorus lines and solo performances. Our performances are inspired by classic 1920s-40s music and many are traditional burlesque acts. Tradition burlesque is classy and sexy without being raunchy. Our costumes are authentic for the time period.
Who would be attracted to the show and why?
The show is for everyone and anyone 18 and up. Anyone with an open mind and an appreciation of art in all forms.
