The RJ-31 school board unanimously appointed Save Our Salida Schools as the 501(c)(3) organization to disburse the $250,000 Nestle endowment, stipulating a Salida school board member as a representative to that board. Even with the bad news on plastics and the questionable health of bottled water, what’s a school board to do? It’s a tough business managing school budgets these days. Buying good press on the other hand is easier when you have deep pockets. The question is, do we buy the line that the water is better than what comes out of our tap? Let’s just hope that our community does their homework and keeps the plastic bottles out of the schools.
Consider: #1 PET plastic bottles generate more than 100 times the toxic emissions to the air and water than making the same size bottle out of glass. Production emissions include sulfur oxides, nitrous oxides, and the chemicals styrene, benzene and trichloroethane.
