Celebrate the Holiday Spirit at SteamPlant Open House
The Friends of the SteamPlant invites the community to a free open house in the SteamPlant Ballroom Friday evening immediately following Salida’s downtown Parade of Lights.
We had a fantastic turnout after last year’s parade, and our community is fortunate to have the support of the Friends of the SteamPlant, which sponsors this festive new tradition.
Again this year, the Salida High School drama students will present “T’was the Night Before Christmas,” and then musicians Farrell Coy, Cec Hogarth and Brian Pence will round out the evening with holiday songs and jazz. Come enjoy the free hot chocolate and cookies, the sounds of the season and the twinkling lights on our 15-foot Christmas tree.
Thanks to the Friends of the SteamPlant, 60 local children were selected to perform two performances of “King Arthur’s Quest” with the Mizzoula Children’s Theater last week at the SteamPlant. We hope these children will relive their wonderful memories for many years and continue to value the theater and arts as a significant part of their lives.
This Sunday at 3 p.m., come enjoy an afternoon concert by the Walden Music Society. They’ll present incredible music from the classical Schubert to famous American show tunes with Donnie Ray Albert, internationally acclaimed baritone. He’ll join the Walden Ensemble to sing “Die Allmacht” and “Erlkonig” by Schubert, “I Got Plenty O’Nuttin” from “Porgy and Bess” and “For You, For me, Forevermore” by George Gershwin. He’ll also present “If Ever I Would Leave You” from “Camelot” by Frederic Loewe, “Ol’ Man River” from “Showboat” by Jerome Kerns, and “Praline and Fudge” by Robert X. Rodriguez. With Albert will be Jason Erwin, violinist, Matt Diekman, viola, Camilla Bonzo, ‘cello, Joel Bonzo, double bass, and pianist extraordinaire Jo Boatright to interpret the famous “Piano Quintet in A Major, ‘The Trout’, Op. 114″ by Schubert. This is a musical event you won’t want to miss.
On Dec. 5, a free concert for the community is slated at 7:30 p.m., as the Alpine Orchestra’s All-Mozart concert series at the SteamPlant features three local soloists. On stage in the Theater will be Leadville artists Lawrence Brady presenting “Horn Concerto Number 3 in Eb Major” and Maggie Dishman presenting “Flute Concerto Number 1 in G Major.” From Buena Vista, Paul Ilecki will present the “Oboe Concerto In C Major.” Rounding out the program will be Mozart’s “Divertimento Number 2.” The public is invited. There is no admission charge but contributions are welcome to help defray expenses.
A holiday classic will come to life on Dec. 11, 12, 18 & 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 13 at 2:30 p.m. as Stage Left Theatre Company presents “It’s A Wonderful Life” by Joe Landry. This beloved holiday classic presented as a live 1940s radio broadcast with a few dozen characters on stage tells story of idealistic George Bailey as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve.
On Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m., the CMC Jazz Ensemble will present a free concert featuring the music of Count Basie and Buddy Rich. This free concert is open to the public and donations will be accepted to help purchase music for future concerts.
On Dec. 26 at 7 p.m. , the merriment continues with the SteamPlant’s “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree” party and dance with music provided by Hypnocracy. Admission is $5.
On Dec. 31, ring in the New Year at the SteamPlant while watching New Year’s arrive in New York, Chicago and Salida live on the big screen. Join us for heavy hors de oeuvers, dance music, fun, door prizes and midnight fireworks. To make reservations, call the SteamPlant at 530-0933.
Thanks to the Friends of the SteamPlant, many concerts, art exhibits and other community events have come to the SteamPlant this year, and we expect 2010 to be even better.
