Mountain Goats all around

goatWe just saw this goat from 285, seven miles north of Buena Vista on the west side of the highway. We drove up next to him as he was napping startling everyone as he stood up, able to look into the windows of our SUV quite easily.

By the time my oldest son got his camera out to take this he was cruising South like a cartoon in a hurry. So, my quick thinking twelve year old switched to a 300mm, and caught the beautiful beast looping around us and, presumably, heading back up to the Harvard Basin and Collegiate Wilderness.

Has anyone else seen this guy around? How often do they come down?

Though they can often be seen on most days cruising the Chalk Cliffs, the last time I saw one up close was in Glacier National Park, in NW Montana. But, up there they drive the tourist buses and wear little fake Swiss guide hats, which somehow always seems less wild. I’m joking, they don’t wear hats.

  3. I’m jealous, all I ever see on road trips are deer. And the cranky wife of course.
