How is there any possibility of success whatsoever in Afghanistan? And at what cost?
We are mired in Afghanistan and Iraq in the meantime the largest stockpile of nukes outside of the US is under questionable security in Russia, Pakistan has weak leadership with nukes and Al Qaeda, untold number of domestic problems to fix (healthcare, economy, education, etc.) and basically no, significant, action on climate change which will trump all other problems in my children’s lifetime.
I am deeply disappointed with Obama right now after briefly suspending my cynicism a year ago.
As a former infantryman, I am pleased to know that our troops are being supported with improving resources and adding to our operational abilities. As a civilian….I cannot identify an end game that will have any truly measurable benefit. No need to ask a General what their recommendations are….”more troops and funds” will always be their answer.
Rumsfeld had Bin Ladin in his sights and didn’t pull the trigger. Could it be some in the industrial military complex want to keep the boogie man alive so they can continue making a killing? I don’t appreciate what Bush and Cheney, excuse me Cheney and Bush did, and would love to see them tried for crimes against this and other countries. I will always push for honest answers and until the truth is known I will doubt the honesty and effectiveness of any country that is run by corporate interests. We The People are being used like puppets because we cannot understand the languages used in our governance and are left to the dissimination of information from such dubious sources as Fox (Faux) News and liars like Limbaugh and O’Reiley. The scary thing is, afluenza has insulated people from the morality of the U.S.A. We are bombarded with lies from the richest who are afraid their billions will be scruitinized…how was it gained..did they have off shore tax loop holes..did they fire locals and hire foreigners…etc? Ethics by and for the people…honest government by and for the people…identification of the liars and cheats by and for the people. If we can’t understand the volumns and volumns of boilerplate, then you know our government representatives don’t. They are left to the interpretations of who then? Clean it up America. Clean it up!
We can’t solve thousands of years worth of problems with our prescence. Rout Al Qaeda out in Pakistan instead.
Afghanistan has been a sink hole for world powers for millenia, and I fear this story will have a similar ending. We’re trying to accomplish the impossible: transforming a feudal system of warlords overseeing a narco-economy that has become a refuge for terrorism into a mirror of our republic. The jihadists wanted to engage America in a holy war against Islam? They got it. We either pull out now and roll the dice with the consequences or we stay for another 100 years and colonize, but tip-toeing somewhere in the middle gets us nowhere.

Read ‘The Great War for Civilization’, by Robert Fisk. Anyone who thinks there can be a military solution in Afghanistan is mistaken.
I could’nt agree with what’s been said more. But, it is refreshing to actually have a president speak openly and clearly about his decisions, and he is actually following through on what was one of his major campaign promises!? Lets not forget how we got here and support the man who’s given this SHT to clean up.

I’ve heard all the pros and cons for the Irag and Afgan wars—- I can’t help but imagine, “what if” all those billions had not not been spent on war, what shape would our country be in now?
I was glad to see Obama taking so much time to make a decision, this was a good sign to me. Now it seems like Bush/Cheney in Iraq again sending more troops. All that means is more suffering all around, and a ga-zillion more dollars denied to our countries needs. Not to mention fueling more hate for Americans. I cant imagine having one of my kids killed over there for such a cause. How heart breaking. Not to mention the abuse to the civilians. Is Iraq a better place now? What about todays car bomb? among the many dead was a liitle boy going to school for the first time…I saw the photo of his mom holding him. can you imagine?
