On Saturday, January 16 renowned local author and naturalist Susan J. Tweit will present a lecture on the “Polka Dot” Forest. The pinon pine-juniper woodland on the lower hills around the Upper Arkansas River Valley can be easily recognized by the polka-dot pattern of the trees. This regular pattern is due mainly to drought, and drought tolerance makes for very creative adaptations on the part of the inhabitants. Join Tweit to discover the secrets and stories of the woodland referred to as “p-j”. The program will begin at 7:00 PM at the Salida Community Center, 3rd and F Streets. The cost is free for GARNA members and $5 for non-members.
This presentation is part of GARNA’s Our Sense of Place, a year long program teaching about our place in respect to the Arkansas River bioregion. This program is designed to explore the natural world of the Upper Arkansas River Valley through seminars, outdoor adventures and activities to acquaint and promote a ‘rootedness’ in the place we call home. Each month includes an evening program open to the public. Please call GARNA at 719-539-5106 for more information.
