On Tuesday, February 2, the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association will host a birding program along with their annual association meeting. This year’s program will be led by Buena Vista resident Mark Wolters, a licensed Colorado falconer who has flown birds for wild game hunting for 32 years. Mark’s presentation will focus on the first year of a raptor’s life, general characteristics, falconry and raptors seen in the Arkansas River Valley and he’ll bring his female Harris hawk along. GARNA board member-elect Dibby Olson will present her work with HawksAloft, Inc. an Albuquerque nonprofit organization committed to conserving indigenous wild birds and their habitat through education, research, and cooperation with other organizations. The CO Division of Wildlife will be on hand to provide info on bluebird monitoring and Andrew Mackie, Executive Director of the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas and experienced birder will share his knowledge on bird banding and optics. The event will be held at the Salida Community Center at 5:00 PM with food and refreshments. Families are encouraged to attend! The birding program will begin at 6:00 PM. For more information please call GARNA at 539-5106.
