The Salida Pak Mail store will begin accepting compact disks, DVDs, and Blu Ray disks for recycling beginning March 16, says owner Skye Ridley.
“Each year, billions of CDs and DVDs are manufactured, and millions of these discs end up in landfills and incinerators,” said Ridley. “Most people don’t recycle data disks only because they don’t know what to do with them. So we decided to make it easy. All you have to do is drop off your discs to Pak Mail, and we’ll take care of the rest. There’s no charge, but donations to help pay for the program will be gratefully accepted.”
Pak Mail can recycle discs as well as the paper booklets and any other paper or cardboard that comes with the discs. However, Ridley said that the components MUST be separated prior to bringing them to her store. “We don’t have time to sort through mixed bags or boxes,” she said. “If you shred your discs due to sensitive data, the scraps can be mixed in with other un-shredded discs, but please don’t mix other shredded materials with your discs.”
The plastic retrieved from the disks is used in the automotive and building materials industries. Ridley will pay the cost to ship the disks to recycling centers.
Pak Mail already recycles or re-uses packing peanuts, bubble wrap, packing paper, sheet styrofoam, and extra-heavyweight cardboard sheets and boxes. They also accept ink cartridges for the Cartridges for Kids Program, and cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers Program, and the paper put through their secure shredding program is also recycled.
“All of these programs cost us in terms of space, employee time, and cash,” Ridley said. “But it’s important to do it anyway before we all end up under mountains of toxic trash.
“I wish we could re-use regular-weight cardboard boxes, too, but Fed Ex and UPS won’t reimburse for damages if we ship in in used boxes. However, we do recycle every scrap of cardboard that comes in to us.”
