As some of you know, there is not enough money in the budget to put in a water fountain at our new bathrooms by the boat ramp and SteamPlant. We spoke with Mayor Chuck, and as of yesterday, community members had already stepped up to the task, kicking in some $2000. But, there is still a shortfall.
We need to raise another $1500 to make it happen. It’s kind of ironic that when we need it the most, millions of gallons of water will be flowing just a few feet away. But, alas, agua potable.
The issue with how this came to be may be another article. Feel free to comment below if you understand the issue’s details.
Our primary interest today is to help make it happen. If you can contribute any amount please drop us a note and we’ll put your people with our people: salidacitizen@gmail.com
Sometimes we come across issues so perfectly timed it makes even our seasoned staff blush with editorial symbiosis.
We are happy to report that many in our community rallied and raised the needed funds to have the drinking fountains installed. The Chaffee Citizens for Sustainability collected the donations and delivered a check to the City of Salida to make it happen. A big thank you to all that helped. Man, I love this community. – ss

Chaffee Citizens for Sustainability has made the committment to raise the $1500. We are off to a good start. Last night at the Earth Day celebration event at the Salida Community Center we received generous donations for the drinking fountains amounting to $875. That leaves $625 to go. Anyone wanting to help us with this project can send a check to CCFS @ PO Box 426, Salida 81201 and note on the bottom that it is exclusively for the drinking fountains.
Thank you!
That is so great! What an aweseme community we have. I had better check my pockets for some money.
It is great that people are stepping up and helping out. Thanks. In the grand scheme Rob Vance and I have been working hard to keep a project, with multiple contractors and lots of different elements, in budget. All and all I think we have done a good job. In most of my projects, around the US, a 10% over run is not all that rare and while no community likes change orders, it is typically expected. Today in Salida we have a very difficult budgetary situation and lots of very valuable budget items are being cut, so every dollar counts. Our overrun on this project is only about 3%, but the City simply can’t go outside the budget.
The Arkansas River Trust has already raised $10,000 for this project and we just increased out commitment to $12,500. I personally appreciate the community taking on various pieces and the drinking fountain would be great. Big thanks to LiveWell Chaffee County for the $1,000 they already committed to help with the bouldering wall.
Has anyone thought to ask Nestle’ for the amount?
When SPOT planned and raised money to build Monarch Spur Park, the pocket park next to the trail at 3rd and I streets, we ended up short of money to put in a drinking fountain too. So the neighbors chipped in the money for the fountain, and it gets a lot of use. It’s the only public drinking fountain in Salida right now, and we need more! Thanks to LiveWell Salida and Chaffee Citizens for Sustainability for taking the lead on this. (And yes, hitting up Nestle is a great idea!)

The needed funds have been raised! Chaffee Citizens For Sustainability has presented a check for $1500 to the city of Salida for the drinking fountains. These funds came from generous donations from local citizens and from the CCFS organization. Thanks to everyone who participated in this project to help ensure easy access to drinking water.
