Without a doubt everyone one of us has been affected directly or indirectly by cancer. The Citizen Team is passing on this reminder about tomorrow’s fundraiser and encourages you to get outside, check out part of the new trail system and support this very worthy cause. -ss
The second annual Tenderfoot Cancer Climb gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, in Riverside Park.
The day begins with a free breakfast in the Scout Hut for cancer survivors. Individuals and teams can still register for the event in front of the band shell between 8: 30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Registration is $35 for individuals and $100 per team.
Musician Keeper Koepplinger will kick off the festivities and debut his new song “I Want to Live,” which was composed for this event. Mayor Chuck Rose opens the ceremony honoring cancer survivors and their caregivers at 9:30 a.m.
The 3.5-mile hike up Tenderfoot Mountain begins at 10 a.m. Twenty teams are signed up for this American Cancer Society (ACS) fundraiser, along with individual walkers, runners and bicyclists. After the Climb, a free lunch will be served to participants, and bluegrass musician Don Richmond will perform.
Since 1946, the ACS has invested $3.2 billion in cancer research and played a significant role in such scientific milestones as bone marrow transplants, the Pap test, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and cancer drugs such as Tamoxifen. The ACS also works directly in Chaffee County by providing free transportation for cancer patients to medical treatments and sponsoring Look Good—Feel Better seminars for cancer patients undergoing treatment.
