What kind of bird is that? GARNA birding classes offered

Have you looked out your window and wondered what kind of bird is that? At least 465 species of birds have been seen in Colorado. Do you want to learn to tell them apart? Interested in knowing more about what birds are found in the Upper Arkansas Valley and how they survive? If so, join this GARNA program to explore the world of birds. In two classes and one field trip, we will discuss topics in bird identification, birding equipment, local birding sites, natural history of local bird species, and recent conservation initiatives. Andrew Mackie, Executive Director of the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas, is the instructor. Andrew is an experienced birder and has conducted workshops and field trips across the United States. For fifteen years, Andrew worked with nature centers and wildlife sanctuaries for the National Audubon Society. He has conducted scientific research on bird migration and surveys for grassland birds, waterfowl, nesting wood storks, and breeding forest birds. Andrew is also an experienced environmental educator.
There are two options for attending this series. Participants may choose to attend both classes and the field trip or only the two classes. The first class will be held Thursday, May 27, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Salida Cafe downstairs; the second class is Wednesday, June 2, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in Buena Vista at the Sangre de Cristo Electric Association Meeting Room. The bird watching fieldtrip will take place Saturday, June 5, 8:00 a.m., location yet to be determined.
Cost for all three sessions is $45 for GARNA members, $55 for non-members. For the two classes only, cost is $30 for association members and $40 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by visiting www.garna.org/seminars.htm. For additional information, please contact GARNA at 539-5106 or info@garna.org.
