Current and former members of the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) City Planning staff, contractors, architects, Realtors and building owners met on May 27th to comment on a Design Guidelines document currently being updated. To view the current draft guidelines, click here then select “Downtown Design Guidelines Available for Review” in Events and Announcements.
The HPC has been working for months with a goal of filling in current gaps in design standards for owners of contributing and non-contributing structures in the downtown Salida Historic District. During the meeting, additional clarity and enhancements were proposed for incorporation, including a list of resources to help guide owners as they plan their projects. Guidelines are based on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties, as interpreted for situations commonly encountered in Salida’s Downtown Historic District.
In an effort to help educate prospective building owners/investors considering a purchase, The City may make available to area Realtors copies of the map “Structures Contributing to the Salida Downtown Historic District”, along with a link to the 2001-2002 Historic Buildings Survey for structures in the District. Realtors may also elect to note on their Buyer’s checklist if a building is in the Historic District.
Citizen input is welcomed in the guideline review process. While building owners may not find everything contained in the document to be to their liking, it is a genuine attempt to apply consistent treatment to all applicants. In addition, the document contains details of the step by step process applicants should use when considering any project so that it can flow smoothly through all City agencies as well as the HPC.
The Commission encourages that comments on the proposed guidelines be sent as soon as possible to Community Development Director, Dara MacDonald . A formal public hearing with the Historic Preservation Commission will also be scheduled before adopting the new guidelines.
