Highway 50 Pedestrian Enhancement Project

Winter is slowly releasing it grasp on us and we are starting to enjoy all that spring brings to Colorado. With that we are finally able to put the finishing touches on the Highway 50 Pedestrian Enhancement Project. This project was the street light and sidewalk and parkway improvements made during the fall and winter of last year. Technically the project was completed on December 12, 2009; however adverse weather prevented us from having the final inspection.
This inspection is necessary to conclude the project and to note any deficiencies that need to be corrected prior to the project moving into the warranty period. We have scheduled that inspection for May 12th. Over the next couple of days we will on Hwy 50 doing some cleaning of the area in preparation of that inspection.
May 12th, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. is also the day in which we will officially hold the ribbon cutting ceremony. This ceremony will celebrate both projects we had on Highway 50 this past year; the Holman Stoplight and the Pedestrian Enhancement project. Both projects have been in the works for many years and it is great to have them both completed. They have both had a substantial impact on the appearance and safety of HWY 50. The public is invited to celebrate this great occasion with us. There will be officials from CDOT, Chaffee County, and the City of Salida as well as those business owners and citizens that have worked so diligently to make these projects happen. So please come joins us for the celebration and enjoy some light snacks and drinks after in the Pavilion in Centennial Park. We will gather at the corner of Holman and Hwy 50 at 1:00 p.m. to start the ceremony. Salida Mayor, Chuck Rose will officiate and cut the ribbon.
I would personally like to thank the Highway 50/291 Corridor Group for their tireless work to make the enhancement project a reality. I would also like to thank Dara MacDonald and her staff for the work they provided in applying for grants and administering the design process. Of course none of this could have been possible without CDOT’s help and support so a special thanks to those at Region 5 for all the work they have done. A special note of thanks goes to the Chaffee County Commissioners and County staff that supported these projects and helped get them on the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan.
And while I am thanking people, some of you may have noticed another round of dust suppressant applied at the recycling center behind the pool. This was done through a combined effort of the City and Chaffee County. The Board of Commissioners agreed to allow the Road and Bridge to use some of the road dust suppressant on the recycling area. So a special thanks goes out to the County Commissioners, Dan Short, Joe Nelson and the staff at Road and Bridge for their work and help to make this happen. It was a great opportunity for a combined effort and I look forward to working cooperatively in the future. Thank you.
