The award-winning poet, Chris Ransick, will perform at the third and final poetry event hosted this season by Salida ArtWorks on Sunday, May 16, at 7 p.m., in the Paquette Gallery at The Steam Plant, 220 E. Sackett. There is no admission fee; however, donations are appreciated. An open forum for other poets wanting to recite their works will follow Ransick’s recital. Interested persons may sign up at the door.
Ransick also will lead an afternoon workshop from 2 to 5 earlier on Sunday at the Salida Regional Library, 405 E Street. The workshop will offer help, critique and inspiration to both novice and established poets. The cost is $25 (cash). To reserve a space, email poetryworkshops@gmail.com.
Ransick, Denver’s poet laureate, won a Colorado Book Award in 2003 for his first book, Never Summer. He was a 2005 CBA finalist for his collection of short stories, A Return To Emptiness, and in 2006 published another collection of poems, Lost Songs & Last Chances. Ransick holds masters’ degrees in journalism and creative writing, and he worked as assistant to the editors of on the definitive anthology, The Last Best Place: A Montana Anthology. In 2009, he was awarded a planning grant from Colorado Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities to begin work on editing a comprehensive anthology of Colorado literature. His most recent collection of poems, Asleep Beneath the Hill of Dreams, was published in November 2009.
