Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center is adding nuclear medicine to its medical imaging services. Nuclear Medicine involves the use of small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose and treat disease, including cancer and heart disease.
The hospital received its radioactive materials license from Colorado’s Department of Health on June 3. It will begin offering nuclear medicine services on June 17.
Nuclear medicine imaging scans help physicians visualize the structure and function of organs, tissues or bones. It can detect tumors, bone fractures and kidney disease, among many other conditions. Patients no longer need to travel to Canon City or the Front Range to have thyroid, bone or renal function scans performed.
“After an eight-year hiatus, we are pleased to once again be able to offer this important imaging modality to our patients at HRRMC,” said Greg Messmer, vice president of ancillary and support services. “The service will be available at HRRMC for two days of every week. Should the demand exceed the two-day availability, additional days can be added.”
In addition to nuclear medicine, HRRMC’s Medical Imaging Department offers the most advanced digital imaging services, including CAT scans, MRIs, ultrasound and digital mammography.
