The weekend of June 26-27, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado will host a trail construction project to add 2.5 miles to Salida’s planned 40-mile Arkansas Hills Trail System.
Approximately 125 volunteers are needed to help with the effort. In addition to rewarding work on the trail, volunteers can also enjoy a Friday evening reception at the Boathouse Cantina, delicious food, musical entertainment, environmental presentations, and camping. Timing of the event also coincides with Salida’s Annual Art Walk, providing volunteers with additional evening entertainment options.
What: Volunteers will construct new trail to extend the Back Bone trail, creating a critical connector for the system’s 40 miles of planned trail. No experience is necessary – volunteers will work in small teams led by skilled leaders. The minimum age is 16. Camping will be available and meals will be provided for volunteers.
To Volunteer: Volunteers must pre-register in order to adequately plan for tools, supplies, and food. Volunteers may register for one or both dates. Registration and information is available at www.voc.org, or by contacting matt@voc.org or 303-715-1010, x112.
Who: This effort is being organized by Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado in partnership with Salida Mountain Trails. Support is generously provided by the City of Salida, the Bureau of Land Management, the Salida Rotary Club, and many Salida-area businesses.
About the Arkansas Hills Trail System - The Arkansas Hills Trails System is a collaborative project between the City of Salida, Salida Mountain Trails (a chapter of Salida area Parks Open Space and Trails), and the Bureau of Land Management to build 40 miles of new hiking trails across the Arkansas River from Salida. The trail system is based around a trailhead near Tenderfoot Hill, and offers opportunities for foot travel and mountain biking in a forested setting. 15 of the 40 miles of trails have been completed. When complete, it is anticipated that the trail system will be used by thousands of visitors each year, attracting both residents and tourists.
About Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) - Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is a statewide nonprofit volunteer organization whose mission is to motivate and enable citizens to be active stewards of Colorado’s natural resources. Since 1984, more than 60,000 citizens led by skilled volunteer leaders have helped protect, enhance, restore, and preserve Colorado’s natural places through their work with VOC – a total donated labor value of over $16 million. Throughout the year, VOC offers hands-on opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to volunteer outdoors throughout the state and help with stewardship efforts such as restoring trails in wilderness areas, constructing paths in city parks, and protecting fragile riverside habitat.
