The City of Salida Fire Department wishes to say thank you for your support as we continue to bring the residents of the city and Chaffee County a 4th of July fireworks celebration that displays our community’s patriotism and spirit. After viewing the show, I believe we accomplished our goal.
The fireworks display is accomplished each year due to the generosity of the businesses and citizens of Salida, Poncha Springs and adjoining areas. Without your continued support and donations we would not be able to bring you the show. To each of you we want to pass on a huge Thank You!
This year’s show was the largest in the city’s history and this was done due to the success of last year’s fundraising efforts of the firefighters and local businesses. In addition, a huge thank you goes out the Salida City Council and Salida Business Alliance, who provided additional funds to bring you the larger show. As with each of the citizen donations, we could not have done it without them.
The fund raising efforts for next year’s show have already begun with the annual firefighter boot drive. With the assistance of the Chaffee County Fire Protection District Poncha Springs Station, we were able to visit all of the roads in Salida, Poncha Springs and areas immediately surrounding the city and town. I am pleased to say your support has put us on the track for an equally large show next year. We will continue to do fund raising efforts throughout the rest of the year to make sure we bring you a show you will enjoy and bring more visitors to the city to watch. If we missed you last Friday and you would still like to donate towards the fireworks, you can still make a donation. Donations can be mailed to City Hall or dropped off at the fire station. Please make sure you write “Fireworks” in the memo section of your check.
I would be remiss if I did not take the opportunity to pass on a couple of safety reminders.
As you have seen in the paper, we have had a few river incidents over the last couple of weeks that have unfortunately caused 3 deaths and 2 injuries. Please remember, even though water levels are down from the spring runoff, the river with its currents, eddy’s strainers and the low head dam can be a dangerous place for you, your family and your friends. Before you go boating, rafting or wading, remember to follow the basic safety rules of the river: wear a proper life jacket and know your abilities. Doing those simple things can prevent a tragedy.
Two weeks ago there was a significant wild land fire in the Parkdale area that burned a very large area and cost a family their home and barn. Please keep in mind the increased fire danger and make sure your home and subdivision are Firesafe. If you have any questions about how to protect your home from these dangers contact your local fire department.
Once again, thanks for your continued support and we sure hope you enjoyed the show.
Don Taylor, Fire Chief
