Volunteers are making swift progress at Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity’s 7th and 8th build, a duplex for the Jenn Fisher and Cristyl Nuzum families, located at the Starbuck’s Dairy subdivision in Salida. Currently, the completion date is scheduled for October.
Since groundbreaking on May 22nd, over 85 volunteers have put in well over 1,800 build hours to make this dream a reality. Dale Shoemaker, Volunteer, Materials, and Sub-contractor Coordinator, is thrilled by the great turnout. “I want to offer A BIG THANKS to each of you!”

The duplex is now completely framed, and from July 18th-24th, the construction team and volunteers completed sheeting the garage roofs and the exterior walls. The next area of focus is to build the two entry porches followed by installing 1″-thick DOW board and housewrap to the exterior. Roughed-in plumbing and electrical work has also begun, to be followed by a framing inspection and “drying the house in.”
The “Blitz Build,” an intensive five-day effort that began July 5th and ended July 10th, was a huge success. Volunteers with the Upper Arkansas Habitat Missions Trip and trip members from the Congregational United Church of Christ and Clearview Community Church in Buena Vista framed up all interior and exterior walls, set trusses on the main house, and installed roof decking.
“During the Blitz Build, we had up to 35 volunteers a day for 5 days,” says Jon Quedenfeld, Construction Site Manager. “It was a huge success, and the construction team thanks everyone who worked so hard. That week helped us out more than you could ever imagine.”
There are over 250 build volunteers on the e-mail mailing list. “We would love to have more of you come and participate,” says Shoemaker. “In fact, my personal goal (desire) is that over 50% of you will participate before this build is over.”
Jon Quedenfeld adds, “We still have a long way to go in completing this project. Our next two weeks will be spent on all the little things that take forever to complete so we can move on to the interior finishing stages. We still need volunteers to achieve this goal.”
Dale Shoemaker adds, “Please come and join in on the sweat and fun. There is plenty left to do, and volunteers make it happen!”
