Over 100 enthusiastic shoppers and Salida’s mayor, Chuck Rose, attended the ReStore ‘n’ More grand opening in Salida on July 17th. The store, located at 224 E. Hwy. 50 in Salida (next to the former Otero Cyclery building), is operated jointly by Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity and The New Caring and Sharing of Salida and promises great deals on antiques (The New Caring and Sharing area of the store) and new and used building materials (CCHfH’s area of the store.)
Despite a cash-register glitch, which was soon fixed, Gerry Dixon, Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore Manager says, “It was a great success.”
Customers commented that they liked the clean, organized layout of the store and the blending of The New Caring and Sharing’s home décor (antiques) with CCHfH’s building supplies–all under one roof. The biggest selling items at the grand opening were furniture and cabinets, but customers can also find new and used appliances, electrical, plumbing, building materials, paint, and many other items, all priced at 40-60% off retail.
Many volunteers assisted both organizations ahead of the store opening by moving merchandise from the Buena Vista ReStore location and the Caring and Sharing store, as well as by taking in new donations, setting up in-store displays, graphic arts work, painting, assembling products, cash register training, and many other tasks. Even before the store opening, though, people came by in anticipation nearly every day.
The ReStore’s hours of operation will depend greatly on the number of volunteers who can sign up for regular hours. “We need volunteers to commit and be dependable like those we have in Buena Vista,” Dixon says. Currently, after a meeting held on July 23rd, there seems to be good coverage for most of the summer, but Dixon stressed the need for volunteers to work after summer has passed.
In addition, Dixon says the next-most pressing need is “help to get things that are donated to The New Caring and Sharing cleaned, tested, and delivered to our store.” Appliances pose a special challenge; CCHfH does not accept appliances over 10 years old. Anyone donating any materials must sign an agreement declaring the materials donated are in proper working order, not stolen, not hazardous, and are suitable for the purpose they are donated for.
Donations to the Salida ReStore ‘n’ More location can be made through The New Caring and Sharing’s donation point behind 4th street between G & H streets in Salida or at the Buena Vista ReStore 213 Tabor Street between Beads Louis and Peak Fitness.
