So, unless you’ve been living under a Pinon Tree, you know there are a lot of people working hard to create a new high school for you. But, here at the Citizen, we are seeking YOUR input. So, check out this site, then come back to the Citizen and feed us some ideas in the comments area below this article.
Some decisions are made, such as the fact that it’ll be built on the current track, then after completion, the old school will be torn down, and a new (swankier) track constructed. There are other practical issues that have been decided, such as square footage, but the final look and interior features have yet to be decided. So, dig the plans.
We know that you now have a pathetic excuse for a school. We’re on your side. You want a killer facility? Tell us about it.
Please use your real name, and tell us your grade. If your ideas are used, we’ll give you $25 (limited to a half dozen people or so). If you suggest a big idea that is incorporated, we may be able to do even better.
Lastly, if you are in eighth grade, we’d like to hear from you as well. Hit us, and please keep it brief.
Please forward the web site www.salidaschoolbond.com to your parents, and anyone you know over eighteen years old who lives in the district. They need to vote for the bond to make this new school a reality. Thanks’

i want the new high school to be open with many windows and open top levels and bridges that see down to the next level. i think we should build it green and futuristic. also i would like to make it so you feel comfortable with an open seating area for cafeteria with rounded halls and different shapes for areas and or classes. i think this would be great for a new comfortable spacious high school :)
i think that the building should be rectangular to optimize space usable. all the projectors should be mounted, like most are, except not ghetto rigged. the strange slanted halls, ie drafting/woodshop/art hall, need to go. doors on bathroom stalls would be nice.decent windows to keep out the drafts. having the auditorium is cool, need another in the new school. if the rooms werent so long, and more square shaped, there wouldnt be those poor people in the back or the far side who cant see/ hear. granite stairs are slippery when wet, from snow and rain. carpeted rooms have a better learning atmosphere i think. use skylights where possible, flourescent lights are painful. the courtyard is nice although should have sprinkler systems that run durring the night. heating that functions would be nice too. although i will be out of high school by the school completion, i believe that future salida high students will appreciate some of these ideas.
I think our new school will need state of the art locker rooms and gymnasium. Take Steamboat Springs facilities for example. We traveled there for a soccer game and we used the locker rooms before we went out and warmed up. As we walked into the school, everything was perfectly carpeted and clean. We walked by the gymnasium as we entered the locker room. In the locker room there was a big semicircle of lockers with benches where everyone could sit down and watch as our coach drew plays up on a whiteboard. Eventhough sports aren’t everything, all students take pride in their school when they have nice facilities. Other teams from different schools are amazed and wish their school was as great as ours could be.
Thanks gents, pass it on to others. -bd
Windows. A wall of windows? I’ve seen that before in an architectural blog. It was just one wall in a house that wall made of glass. It really gave you an open feeling. Like you weren’t trapped (Which, sadly enough, is how plenty of students feel in school). On another note, In agreement with Travis- I would also like doors on the stalls in the bathroom. I’m a relatively huge fan of privacy, and I would really enjoy being able to… in private. I also like Evan’s idea of the carpet in the locker room. However, I think Evan forgot to point out that the lockers and the toilets were kept in separate rooms. So if you’re trying to point out that that’s a bad idea, because it would cause mold, there’s something to think about. Another thing to improve would be the HVAC facilities, seeing as around this time of year, my classes are getting to the point where i’m wearing a coat, and earlier in the year, they were at the point where I just wanted to strip down to nothing. I also think that we should have a few more places to relax. I have noticed that a lot of my senior friends just go home during their off hours, but when it comes to the time that I’m a senior, I’m not going to want to waste gas going home, and i’m certainly not going to have the energy to walk/longboard/bike. So if there are more areas where I could just relax, I’d be more likely to stay in school, thus saving me gas, money, energy, etc. I also would like to point out that Cody’s previously stated idea of a “Green School” is a great idea. I don’t think that as humans we think about how the things we do are affecting everything else in the world. Another thing that might be nice… Higher ceilings. As one of the taller kids in our school, I start too feel a little claustrophobic while I’m walking through the busy halls to get to my next class. However, if there were more space above my head, I feel that that claustrophobic feeling might disappear. Lastly, I think there needs to be more art in our school. When I walk into our school, I always feel rather bored. Now I know this isn’t a HUGE problem, but hey, a little pleasure for the eye never hurt anyone. I’m not saying we should bring picasso back to life and have him paint every wall in the hallway (although that would be sweet!). I’m just saying, a few paintings hung up around our school sure would make me feel more at home. And when I’m at home, i’m comfortable. And when I’m comfortable, I find it easy to pay attention. So you get what I’m saying?
Art = Comfort ~ Comfort = Better Grades.
One last thing that I forgot to add…
Have we ever thought about sound proofing the band room? In the mornings when I’m late to jazz band, I can hear the music from nearly three halls away. That’s got to be disruptive to the other classes as well.
