New elementary school option

Education is a cornerstone value in our community.  This is continuously demonstrated not only by our excellent public schools and the many options they provide, but also by the development and growth of successful private options as well.  Further evidence of the communities dedication to excellence in education has come in the recent multimillion dollar grant Salida has been awarded to build a new High School (requiring voter approval of a bond in November) and more recently in the following announcement we received about a new Waldorf inspired elementary school opening this fall.

We are thrilled to live in a community where education and the future of our children are supported so strongly and wish the Ruby Mountain School nothing but success.

An Exciting New Opportunity Awaits Your Child

Dear Friends,

We want to let you know about a new opportunity for elementary education in Salida. The Ruby Mountain Day School is a Waldorf-inspired school that will follow Colorado State Standards while providing a child-centered environment that engages and nurtures students mentally, physically, and emotionally. We will explore the traditional subject areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies, while also focusing on Art, Music, Social Skills, Handskills, Nature, Nutrition, Physical Education and Foreign Language.

Our goal is to provide an education that considers the needs of the whole child, develops the full diversity of human intelligence within each individual, and instills a life-long love of learning.   We endeavor to foster social and environmental responsibility, and respect for individual and cultural diversity.

We will begin the school with a 1st grade or 1st/2nd grade for the 2010-2011 school year, with a goal of eventually having a Kindergarten through 4th Grade school.  We have been offered an existing school space to rent at a very reasonable price.  We are excited to have Lisa Hake as our head teacher.  Lisa has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado at Boulder, is licensed in the State of Colorado to teach Kindergarten through 6th Grade, and is an experienced elementary school teacher.

The Ruby Mountain Day School will be a community effort where parents, staff and students all come together to make the best possible learning environment for each child. So, if this letter has piqued your interest, please join us for an informational meeting.
We know that you may have questions on how we will accomplish these lofty goals and we look forward to the opportunity to discuss them with you. The meeting will be held on Thursday August 5thth at 6pm at Strawberry Door, 1612 Holman Ave., Salida, CO. Also, please share this information with anyone you know who may have elementary aged children and might be interested.

  1. As stated above the article, I think the opening of this school is a tribute to the progression of our wonderful town of Salida. We all receive the benefits of furthering education and educational opportunities in our town. Please continue to support our local public and private schools.

  2. I love this. As a father of two who have benefited from great teachers at Montessori, TLC, Strawberry Door and the Crest Academy… It is this type of evolution that keeps our family committed to Salida. There was a time in recent past that we seriously considered a move to a town or city that demonstrated an awareness that healthy, vibrant schools are at the very heart of the community. No more. The passionate work of the school board, Mayor Rose, those inside education and those outside education who have taken the time and made the effort to care for our children – has proven to us that we live in a very special place made up of very special people.

Another landmark opportunity is quickly approaching for each citizen of Salida to endorse the upcoming bond issue. When it comes to our children, the children, we must find it in our hearts to offer them not only our wisdom but the financial support to give to them what was given to us. I see it as our duty.

Love and gratitude to our teachers, administration and staff for all that they do and all that they are.
