A Salida event in honor of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday
In celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s October 2nd birthday, the Central Colorado Coalition for Peace is proud to sponsor both the National Tapestry for Peace and a panel of respected lecturers. The tapestry will be displayed from September 17th to October 8th at the Salida Steamplant annex, Mon thru Friday, 10-3pm and Saturday 11 -1 pm and the panel’s conversation will take place Saturday October 2nd, 1 to 4pm, in the annex.
Mideast expert and author David Barsamian will present the status of our Mideast wars. Rev. Dr. Nori Rost, Minister All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church and Sufi practitioner Lynn Marlow, known as Dakini, will integrate non-violent alternatives and most importantly – what is our role? Is Peace possible?
The Tapestry for Peace consists of images of a peaceful world, encouraging those who witness it to identify with peace on a personal level.
Created through Eve Mackintosh’s vision, this incredibly beautiful and awe- inspiring work was completed by people from all over the United States, as a meaningful expression of peaceful coexistence: the work of hundreds would represent the hopes and dreams of millions. Salida High School and Coaldale’s Vessels for Peace created peace panels for this quilt. Sadly, Ms. Mackintosh passed away shortly after receiving the first completed tapestry panel, but her completed vision was hung in the Colorado Capital building. Now it will be in Salida; there are discussions underway to display this work in New York, Ohio and D.C.
Every unique Tapestry panel represents images of peace in embroideries, appliqués, quilts, beadwork, watercolors, fabric paints, acrylics, collages and mixed-media. The entire work stretches out to 264 feet.
On Saturday, October 2 from 1 – 4pm, at the Salida Steamplant annex, please join us in celebrating Gandhi’s birthday in a fashion that would honor his memory and his vision for global peace. Following the three lecturers’, there will be Q & A and you are invited to share Gandhi’s birthday cake.
