Election results

3A  passed with 67% of vote. That means we are getting a new high school, and that is a big deal.

60, 61 and 101 failed. Hickenlooper is the Governor. Tom Massey won. Dave Potts won. Joyce Reno won, Wood won. Pete Palmer won. Brenda Runyon lost. Gail Schwartz won. It appears John Salazar lost. In national news..there are so many places to find info, try Politics Daily.

Here is some beta from The Huff Post, mostly editorial, with a left leaning slant. Also, The Denver Post has some info, though their site is being updated this morning, and may be jumpy. CBS4 has detailed information in a simple list format.

  15. Just about every day gives me a reason to be proud of Salida, can’t really put into words how much this day has to offer. Thank you Salida

  16. Thanks to all you volunteers for helping make 3A a reality, and thanks to Salida voters, particularly business owners, who recognize how important our kids, and the quality of our schools are to the community!

  17. Thank you Salida for confirming what our hearts long for…that is to care for each other and live in new possibilities. Despite the goofy turnings of our collective egos – the power of our love for each other and our children binds us together. I’m hearing Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell…”Aint Nothing Like the Real Thing…”

  18. A big thank you from the teachers and students at SHS!!!

  19. Thanks for the results. I think Gail Schwartz won our county by 203 votes; I am sorry that more voters didn’t realize that without Gail there would be no 3A-would have been nice for her to get more of that 69% but thankful she squeaked by and 3A won big. Piece of political trivial: 71% of voters in Chaffee supported the mill levy for the shelter in 2006, 69% is very close so we live in a county that supports kids and animals, not a bad rep. to have.

  21. Thanks Louise, I’m not usually such an avid post moderator. I’m just very happy about 3A, and enjoying watching all these positive comments come in. To your point, here is a video of Gail discussing Colorado schools, for those who may have missed it. Thanks for the reminder.

  22. Thanks to Robin, the rest of the school board, the committee that worked on 3A, the Citizen, and to everyone else who helped build a coalition. It’s very exciting to see 3A pass by such a large margin, and to think we’re finally going to get a new high school! Congratulations, Salida!

  23. I’m sitting in my office at Salida High School imagining what will be here in two years. I haven’t really allowed myself to do that before. I can’t wait to see what the community creates.

  24. A big hooooooooooooooray from across the pond!

  25. Thanks Salida for 3 A ! but a bigger thanks to all the folks in and out of the tired old building who educate and help my kids become the future. John Michael and Natalie Kreski are doing well because of so many wonderful ancillary staff and teachers in the Salida school system. So thanks and enjoy your new school you all deserve it.

  26. We are creating the future from the present; not the past. We will learn faster, forgive faster and never give up.

  27. This is so exciting! The Boys & Girls Clubs of Chaffee County – Salida Branch kiddos and I will be there to celebrate their future with bells on today!!!

  28. Very nice

  29. Woo-Hoo!!!

This is gonna make a higher education look like a bargain.

From separate statements earlier in the local paper this year (for some reason school boards never put these two numbers together in one place)

    Prior to this election:
    Total K-12 district budget = $15,486,169

Total number of students = 1,004

So (here at least) it looks like, prior to this passing, we were spending $15,424 per student annually.

Add on at least another 10-20 percent for 3A:
    Bottom line – $17,000+……… per kid…………per year…..????

Just a couple comparisons thet I inquired about

    Montgomery County, MD:
    K-12 budget – $2.2 billion (!)
    Enrollment – 141,777
    —> $15,517/student

    Baltimore County, MD:
    K-12 budget – $1.37 billion
    Enrollment – 123,766
    —> $11,069/student

    Howard County, MD:
    K-12 budget – $656 million
    Enrollment – 49,748
    —> $13,186/student

And somewhere along these lines, earlier I was able to find something a bit closer to Chaffee/Salida. Don’t have the numbers here, but they were for Clear Creek County. A somewhat similar size CO district. Bottom Line was in the $11k area. They have all new schools, closed down the old(er) local ones, and bus kids almost out of the county to the new facilities on the Evergreen end.

While there is overwhelming agreement that these facilities are needed, one has to ask, “Why is the cost of basic education so expensive here?”

  30. I am so excited for my colleagues at the high school, and for my current students who will be able to learn in a new, efficient, honorable environment. I am so proud to live in a town that can see beyond dollar signs to the importance of the progress of the greater good of our community. Thank you Bill and Laura for such a successful and positive campaign!

visit R-32-J website for key documents including financial statements
    http://salida.k12.co.us/Page.aspx?PageID=3176
Total revenue for fiscal year ending June 30, 2009
    $10,255,863 with 1093 students.

    1. My numbers were reported in the Mountain Mail earlier this year.
      http://themountainmail.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=19395&SectionID=4&SubSectionID=&S=1
and the enrollment was from sometime near that time but I can’t find it
From your linked Salida R-32-J site:
salida.k12.co.us > Home > Public Notices > Reports to the Public > Aug 9, 2010: Approved district Budget (Excel spreadsheet)
      http://salida.k12.co.us/EndUserFiles/23884.xls last tab

      TOTAL EXPENDITURES = $12,301,611

So, that’s what? Up about 15-20% from end 2009? – (16 months earlier)

While the bottom line, “TOTAL EXPENDITURES & RESERVES” = $15, 485,212

While this budget estimates enrollment at 1,082. – which is down roughly 1%

Even at the low end calculation, that’s still $11,366 per kid this year.
Add the additional 20% increase for 3A and it’s back up to the higher end.

At a 180 day (est school days) per year that comes in close to $75 a piece – per day.

I realize budgets and expenses can be much more complicated than what is presented here, but still it all boils down to the BOTTOM LINE divided by NUMBER ENROLLED.

Moving forward, I have inquired about your questions and your numbers appear to be off. If you’d like to call me, I will explain. If you’d like a serious answer on this serious inquiry, please be transparent, and we will be happy to post the administration’s response in this forum. If you’d like to write an article about your findings, we’d be happy to post it for you.

to learn more about Colorado School finance. It would be nice if “BOTTOM LINE” was that simple, but it is not.

The $15 mil budget for 2010-11 includes Cap. Reserve; Bond; Food Service; Activities; Scholarships; Head Start; Severance; and CPP.
General fund budget: $11,391,250, of this amount $2,142,571 is the fund balance
Grant funds: $659,616, of this amount $101,074 is the fund balance.
