Chicken wire and Model A car seats may seem unlikely materials for an artist, but Merry Cox uses discarded items to create the imaginative three-dimensional compositions on exhibit at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center through March 31.
“The things I collect were discarded, thrown out, used up and left as trash,” said Cox. “Since we are intimately connected to place, combining these man-made objects with ideas of habitat preservation and regeneration makes me question and examine the community of environment and our place in it.”
A self-taught artist, the Salida resident exhibits in Cultureclash in Salida as well as galleries in Breckenridge, Oklahoma City and Denver.
All pieces in the hospital exhibit are for sale, and 25 percent of the proceeds are donated to the HRRMC Foundation. Cox’s work can be viewed at www.merrycox.com.
HRRMC is hosting four art exhibits this year in the main hallway of the hospital’s first floor, as part of its mission to create a healing environment. The hospital displays the work of regional artists, with an emphasis on the Arkansas Valley.
