High Rollers Season Opener April 9th

After a year of preparation, the Ark Valley High Rollers (AVHR) are about to kick-off their first full season on Saturday, April 9th at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds.  Doors will open at 6:30pm and the event begins at 7pm.  They will host a mix-up team consisting of skaters from High Desert Derby from Farmington, NM and a few skaters from AVHR.

The High Rollers began practicing in March 2010 and have grown their league to over 35 members including 23 skaters who have passed their minimum skills test, three refs and nearly ten new recruits.

At the end of last year AVHR began scrimmaging other leagues and walked away with big wins over the High City Derby Divas and Wreckin’ Roller Rebels.

“It was good for the girls to see how other leagues play and build their confidence skating as a team”, said Lisa Malde, co-founder and head coach of the High Rollers.

In January the High Rollers had their first actual bout against the Pikes Peak Derby Dames B team, the Slamazons.  Although the High Rollers prepared for months to take on the well established team, they walked away with their first loss.

“I am really proud of how hard the girls skated,” said Malde.  “We really gave them a run for their money.  Both the fans and the opposing team were amazed at how well we played since it was our first bout.”

The High Rollers are hitting the roller derby scene with full force in 2011.  They have a jam packed schedule including four home bouts, three home open to the public scrimmages, four away bouts and one tournament.

“We are very excited to have a thriving league in our rural community and we really hope the community supports us in our inaugural season,” Malde says.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Moonlight Pizza, Salida Café, She La Vie, BV Roastery and Serendipity.  The cost is $10 in advance and $13 at the door.  Children 10 and under are free.  Special halftime show by the Salida Starlettes.
