“Splash”, a series of trout paintings by Nora Bushong Larimer, is on exhibit at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center through June 30.
Larimer has painted on location around the world, from Southeast Asia and Central America to across the United States. This broad experience has helped to shape her bold watercolors and oils of natural landscapes, florals and fish.
Larimer’s goal as a painter is to depict the essence of an idea, not to copy it. She paints with vibrant colors that sometimes “are not realistic to the viewer not willing to stretch his imagination,” said Larimer. “My hope is to help the viewer to see the world around him or her with ‘new eyes’—to see purple in the water and trees, for instance, when they normally wouldn’t; to connect to their surroundings in a new way or to visually go somewhere new.”
Larimer grew up in a farming community in Illinois and earned a Bachelor of Arts in studio art before becoming a professional artist in 1976. She and her husband, Preston Larimer, opened Rock Run Gallery on South Main Street in Buena Vista in 2008. In addition to Larimer’s art, the gallery carries pottery, glass, jewelry, handcrafted furniture and rugs.
Larimer’s work is included in hundreds of private collections. Three of her trout paintings are imprinted on Patagonia shirts this year, and Home Depot carries a window covering featuring a reproduction of one of her florals. A portfolio of her work can be viewed at www.noralarimer.com.
HRRMC is hosting four art exhibits this year in the main hallway of the hospital’s first floor, as part of its mission to create a healing environment. The hospital displays the work of regional artists, with an emphasis on the Arkansas Valley.
All pieces in the hospital exhibit are for sale, and 25 percent of the proceeds are donated to the HRRMC Foundation. For more information on exhibiting art at HRRMC, call 719-530-2217.
