Salida, Colorado—Jasmine Phares, a 2011 graduate of Buena Vista High School, is this year’s HRRMC Auxiliary Scholarship winner.
The Auxiliary awards the $3,000 college scholarship annually to a high school senior in the Salida Hospital District planning to pursue a career in health care. The $750 annual scholarship is renewed each of four years, pending the student’s academic standing.
In August, Phares will begin classes at Fort Hays State University in Kansas, where she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Phares says her “love for helping people” and her grandmother, who works as a nurse, influenced her career choice.
A National Honor Society member, Phares also played volleyball and basketball in high school and mentored a first-grade student.
The HRRMC Auxiliary first awarded the scholarship in 1967, and Auxiliary President Tina Giles noted that previous winners have gone on and done great things. Past recipients include cancer researcher Greg Ogilvie, Dr. Tim Sandell and HRRMC Rehabilitation Department Manager Desirae Westphal.
