On June 16, 2011 at approximately 3:30 PM there was a commercial rafting accident on the Arkansas River in Chaffee County, Colorado. The accident occurred at Pinball Rapid located near Nathrop, Colorado.
The sixth boat of a seven-boat trip hit a large wave and capsized. All six passengers and the guide were thrown into the river. All passengers and the guide swam to shore or were rescued by other boats except the victim, a 52-year-old man from Aledo, Texas. The man was recovered approximately 500 yards downstream and was not breathing and had no pulse. CPR was immediately started. Emergency medical technicians were boated into the scene by park rangers. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim‚s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The river was flowing 3,250 cubic feet per second at the time of the accident.
