Join Chaffee Ice Coalition for a fund-raiser and movie premier of the award-winning documentary “The Hump” featuring Salida’s hockey team. The event takes place Thursday, August 11 8:00 pm at Benson’s Tavern, 128 North F Street in Salida. The cost is $7 per person.
Funds support Salida Youth Hockey Camps for 8-12 year olds, which will take place for six-weeks this fall. The program is in partnership with Chaffee County Boys and Girls Club. “Money will be used to purchase helmets, gloves, and skates for the kids to learn hockey basics,” explained Chaffee Ice Coalition President Matt Burkley. Coalition member, Tim Brown went on to add, “There are a number of kids and families interested in the program and interested in seeing an ice rink in southern Chaffee County.”
The documentary film, “The Hump” details the commitment and dangers of the Salida Ravens Hockey Team traveling to Gunnison throughout the winter to play hockey. The film was created by Brown’s nephew last winter and received the Environmental Short Film Award at the 2011 Mountain Film Festival in Mammoth, California .
This event is a fun way to support youth ice skating/hockey and plans for a permanent ice skating facility in Chaffee County.
