A nationwide alert had been issued for Chapman by the Missouri State Patrol’s Information Analysis Center on August 11. Chapman was wanted by Missouri officials on a warrant charging him with first degree murder in the shooting death of his wife in the town of Cabool.
The US Marshals Service alerted the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office that Chapman was reported to be somewhere in the area and investigation by deputies and marshals led them to a vacation rental house near the Buena Vista rodeo grounds. Chapman’s pickup truck was seen parked nearby, unoccupied, and was placed under surveillance. After Chapman was spotted entering the vehicle and driving off, sheriff’s deputies initiated a felony vehicle stop and Chapman was taken into custody. A handgun believed to have been used in the crime was recovered from Chapman’s vehicle.
