A Colorado Springs man died after his all terrain four-wheel-drive vehicle overturned Sunday morning during an outing with friends in the Chubb Park area of Chaffee County. Lester Wark, Jr., 72, was riding with five other friends at about 10am today when the machine he was driving struck a water diversion hump and rolled. Mr. Ward, the lead driver and wearing a helmet, was thrown from the vehicle. He was immediately assisted by his companions and at first was responsive. His companions called 911 but within a few minutes Mr. Ward complained of shortness of breath and fell into unconsciousness. His companions began CPR in an effort to revive him.
Chaffee County Sheriff‚s Deputy Jeff Stephens arrived within minutes and continued the CPR efforts. Chaffee County EMS arrived about ten minutes later to assist and they, along with Deputy Stephens, continued efforts to revive the victim. He failed to respond however, and efforts to revive him were ceased. Deputy Coroner Jeff Graf arrived soon afterwards and formally pronounced the death.
The body was taken to the Chaffee County Coroner‚s Office in Salida. An autopsy will be conducted at 11am Monday in Colorado Springs.
