Now that the schools are on a four day week, there is one more day to have fun, learn something new, play a sport, or lend a helping hand. People and organizations around Salida are addressing this issue. Please look at this compilation of classes, camps, and entertainment. This list was put together by Salida Recreation as a service to the community, and includes a wide variety of offerings. This list is also posted on www.SalidaRec.com and will soon be up on the Salida Schools website. If you know about something or are offering something and would like to add it to this list, please email Maggie at salidarecreation@yahoo.com.

Looking at that list, and the costs involved for many of the offerings, it becomes pretty obvious to this parent that the costs we are going to incur on Fridays will more than offset the savings to the school district. In other words, the expense has just been shifted onto our backs. I guess the bright side is some entrepreneurial opportunities are being realized in the community.
I fear a new paradigm wherein we are slowly forced to accept less and less from the public sector, yet paradoxically pay more for it. Like the proverbial frog in the hot water, we may not even notice its happening until it’s too late to really do anything about it.
