Scott Shaffer, a certified registered nurse anesthetist at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center, has earned a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice from Texas Wesleyan University.
Schaffer completed his doctoral degree in August 2011 and plans to attend the graduation ceremony at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas, on December 9. He received a Master of Health Science and certification from the Graduate Program of Nurse Anesthesia at Texas Wesleyan in 1994.
Schaffer completed the three-year doctoral program online while working at the medical center full time. He conducted an evidence-based medical research project entitled “Does supplemental oxygen decrease surgical site infections?” as part of his doctoral studies.
Texas Wesleyan will also confer a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice posthumously on Steve Gilmore, a nurse anesthetist at HRRMC until his death in 2010. Gilmore’s family will be present at the graduation ceremony in December to receive the degree. Schaffer and Gilmore began the doctoral program together in the summer of 2008.
