The Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas Hosts Annual Fundraising Event, Featuring Adventurer Andrew Skurka
Salida – On Thursday, November 17 from 5-9 pm, join the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas for their annual fundraising event, which will feature a program by adventurer Andrew Skurka, presentation of the 2011 Conservationist Award, a delicious light dinner and unique silent auction. The event will be held in the Steam Plant Event Center Ballroom.
Andrew Skurka will present a riveting program about his epic Alaska-Yukon Expedition where he walked, skied and packrafted nearly 4,700 miles across some of the wildest lands in North America. Both the National Geographical Society and Outside Magazine have named Skurka as “Adventurer of the Year” for his very long wilderness walks using the most minimal equipment.
Guests will have a chance to meet Skurka before the program, and can bid on the chance to brunch with him and the Land Trust’s Executive Director, Andrew Mackie, at the Country Bounty on Sunday, November 20.
The event also features a light meal catered by Kalamatapit and the talented Michelle Gap, a transplant from the foodie scene in Breckenridge, and quickly gaining a reputation statewide for her amazing dishes that incorporate local and organic foods.
Local musician, Dave Tipton, will liven your ears with melodies played on the Chapman Stick, a polyphonic chordal instrument that allows the artist to play bass, chords and melody simultaneously.
The Land Trust will also present the 2011 Conservationist of the Year Award, to be awarded posthumously to Mr. Jack Close, a long-time supporter of open space and conservation in the Upper Arkansas Valley. Mr. Close retired to the Nathrop area and served as a member of the Chaffee County Planning Commission for ten years. He was also a founding member of the Land Trust, and a strong supporter of the Land Trust’s effort to protect important ranching properties and significant wildlife habitat in the valley.
During the event, a value-packed silent auction will include exciting items like a spa weekend at Ojo Caliente hot springs, train tickets on the famed Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad, backpacking with Antero Llamas, a float fly fishing trip on the famed Black Canyon of the Gunnison River with Dvorak Expeditions, a handmade fly fishing rod from Arkansas River Rods, a guided snowshoe trip with backcountry aficionado Nate Porter, an original painting by western landscape artist Stephen Smalzel and much more.
Tickets to the event cost $25 and can be purchased in Salida at the Land Trust office (128 East 1st Street – upstairs), Salida Mountain Sports (110 N. F Street, Salida) or the Trailhead Cycle and Ski in Buena Vista (707 US HWY 24N).
All money raised by the event goes directly to the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas. The Land Trust is a non-profit, membership based organization that protects important natural, agricultural, scenic, historical lands and water resources in Chaffee, Lake, Fremont, Saguache and Park counties to enhance the quality of life for people in the region.
