Our school is working to pass an ordinance that would place a 5-10 cent fee on plastic bags in Salida stores. Consumers would have the choice to bring their own reusable bags (for free of course!) or pay a fee for each plastic or paper bag used.

We have had some inquiries about commercial and home recycling services in the valley. Please tell us, and your neighbors what you know. Our goal is to gather general information and an inventory of costs, options and a rundown of what happens to the waste once it leaves our sight. The latter is important as we have had inquiries recently that make it clear most folks don’t know where our valley’s recycling ends up. Please help contribute to The Citizen’s knowledge base. Wastewater Treatment Plant construction began September 28, 2011 with mobilization, excavation and demolition of old equipment. During the last four months, 40,000 yards of earth have been removed from the site and stored on property owned by Larry Hughes to use for future backfilling around the new treatment system.

Grammy Award-winning bluesman Alvin Youngblood Hart will perform with Valerie June at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Jan.27, at the SteamPlant Event Center. Described as a musician’s musician, Hart has garnered praise from the likes of Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. Legendary bluesman Taj Mahal once said of Hart, “The boy has got thunder in his hands.”
