Cooking Matters

The Cooking Matters® Program through Share our Strength is a 6-week program in which participants learn how to select nutritious and low-cost ingredients and prepare them in ways that provide the best nourishment possible to their families. This interactive program consists of a 2 hour class once a week for 6 consecutive weeks and will include a local volunteer chef and dietitian who will teach a broad range of cooking and nutrition topics, including knife skills and safety, food and kitchen safety, maximizing ingredients and resources over several recipes, and tools for making healthier food choices. Participants will leave each class with a recipe, groceries to prepare the recipe at home with their family, a healthy cooking tool, and a better understanding of how to prepare a healthy and nutritious meal for their family.

Chaffee County has the opportunity to become a Cooking Matters community for the Fall 2012, but needs volunteer culinary and nutrition experts, chefs and cooks, caterers, and culinary students or enthusiasts to help facilitate classes. Share Our Strength provides curriculum, instructor guides, some cooking equipment and participant groceries, and will conduct a “Train the Trainer” session for individuals running the classes.

    This sounds like a great program. I operate the golf course in Leadville - and am wondering if this is a program we could host during our off season, while our commercial kitchen and clubhouse sit idle. What do you think? I can be reached by cell at 719-486-6670
