Andrew Mackie will present a program on winter bird identification in Chaffee County on Thurs., Dec. 13, 7 p.m., at the Salida Community Center. This program is open to everyone. It will be especially helpful for those participating in the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count in Chaffee County on Sat., Dec. 22. The program will include help on differentiating similar bird species, finding unusual species and bird counting.
The annual Christmas Bird Count takes place within a 15-mile diameter circle, centered on Salida. Volunteers spend part of the day in specific areas with other teammates, counting every bird sighted. This is the 113th year for the Christmas Bird Count. One of the first Christmas Counts in 1900 was in Pueblo.
This is a free program sponsored by the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association. Attending this program is not a commitment to participate in the Dec. 22 bird count, but you might decide it would be fun to be a part of it. For more information, call GARNA at 719.539.5106.
