CCEDC aims to connect businesses, counselors

Do your colleagues and friends regularly ask you for business advice? Do you enjoy helping other people learn and overcome problems they face? Do you have years of business experience that you could share with new entrepreneurs or small business owners? Do you want to give back to the community? If so, you might be interested in joining SCORE.

The SCORE Association members see themselves as “Counselors to America’s Small Business.” It is a nonprofit association comprised of more than 13,000 volunteer business counselors throughout the country who serve as “mentors” to small businesses and entrepreneurs. Formed in 1964, it was formerly known as the “Service Corps of Retired Executives.”

The key qualification for SCORE counselors is real-world experience. SCORE volunteers have specific industry and general business expertise. Counselors include retired business owners, business executives or operations managers. Many volunteers still work full-time. All volunteers are provided training to serve as counselors, advisors and mentors.

Counseling and training services are offered at no fee, as a community service. SCORE’s experienced business mentors provide general business advice on every aspect of business planning, start-up, management and growth. SCORE provides mentoring to entrepreneurs just getting started or in need of a seasoned pro as a sounding board for their existing businesses. It also offers online and in-person workshops and seminars, typically for a small fee.

Chaffee County Economic Development Corporation works to ensure Chaffee County is “open for business.” Toward that goal, the CCEDC is exploring community interest in starting a SCORE chapter in the county to help bring together experienced businesspeople with those start-ups and small businesses that need specific help in making their businesses successful.

Please plan to join the CCEDC at an informational event on Thurs., Jan. 17 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Salida SteamPlant. There will be a presentation by Iris Clark of the Pueblo SCORE office about the association and what it takes to participate. We invite you to join us for this presentation. A light lunch will be provided. RSVP appreciated, at 719-239-2018 or
