Salida Concerts, Inc. offers music scholarships

Salida Concerts Inc., producers of the summer Salida Aspen Concerts series, will award scholarships this year to deserving music students in Chaffee County. Deadline for applications is May 1.

Board President Kate Larkin said, “We are pleased to offer two scholarships in the amount of $750 each as part of our ongoing program for more than ten years to help young musicians further their education.”

To be eligible, graduating high school students must be college bound to study music or already studying music at the undergraduate level. Scholarship applications have been distributed to high school counselors or the application can be downloaded from the Salida Concerts website.

Students must write about their musical interests and activities in a one-page essay and submit two references, one of which could be from their music teacher, along with the application. Proof of graduation from high school or home school in Chaffee County, or enrollment in an institution of higher learning, also is required.

Scholarships are funded out of the charitable contributions and advertising dollars raised each year to produce the Salida Aspen Concerts series.

In other concert news, Larkin announced that John Samson has joined the board of directors of Salida Concerts and will be helping publicize the series. Samson splits his time between Denver and Salida where he is host of the Sunday, 8-10 a.m. program “Classical Music with John” on KHEN radio.

Planning is underway for the 37th season of Salida Aspen Concerts, July 6-August 13, featuring world-class performers and their students from the Aspen Music Festival. All six concerts in the series will be staged in the 350-seat auditorium of the new Salida High School auditorium, which opened last year.

“We are excited to be working with students and faculty and modern stage equipment in an all new venue,” said Larkin, “and look forward to showcasing it to the community.”

Since its inception in the summer of 1978 the Salida Aspen Concerts series has partnered with the world famous Aspen Music Festival and School where internationally acclaimed artists come to teach and perform with rising stars in their field.
