It’s a pattern in many Western communities. For people who think government has a role in protecting viewsheds and aesthetics, billboards are like unsightly weeds popping up in the cracks of land-use regulations.

We’re slowly forming a strong community of skaters here and Frantz Lake has been great this year. We have a set of ground rules that everyone pitches in on ice maintenance, shoveling when finished, and folks that go out after dark to flood the surface. We had 20+ on sunday and the facebook page is popular.

Next time you hike up frontside ask yourself what you’d pay if that trail did not exist, then consider dropping some greenbacks into Mr. Donation Tube Guy’s hungry mouth.

Our school is working to pass an ordinance that would place a 5-10 cent fee on plastic bags in Salida stores. Consumers would have the choice to bring their own reusable bags (for free of course!) or pay a fee for each plastic or paper bag used.

We have had some inquiries about commercial and home recycling services in the valley. Please tell us, and your neighbors what you know. Our goal is to gather general information and an inventory of costs, options and a rundown of what happens to the waste once it leaves our sight. The latter is important as we have had inquiries recently that make it clear most folks don’t know where our valley’s recycling ends up. Please help contribute to The Citizen’s knowledge base. Thanks!

It began quietly, as an email to 40 friends. But when a steady stream of customers began coming through the door before the family-owned Chagrin Hardware had even opened for the day on Saturday, it was clear that it had turned into much more than that.

Local artist Jimmy can’t stop. The swamps cry out. His truck rolls on, Salida benefits. Don’t miss his next show.
