It’s very excited to announce that Christo will be returning to the Arkansas River Valley.. This will be his first visit since the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued the Over The River Record of Decision (ROD) on November 7, 2011.

The Record of Decision gave Federal approval to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s original vision to suspend 5.9 miles of fabric along a 42-mile stretch of the Arkansas River. This marks the end of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process and the first time that a work of art has undergone this comprehensive Federal analysis.

To celebrate the Over The River Record of Decision, Christo will be hosting Supporter Appreciation Receptions in Cañon City and Salida. He greatly appreciates all the hard work that supporters have done over the last several years. To recognize that dedication and perseverance, Christo will be providing and signing free Over The River posters to all supporters who attend the receptions!

Christo and Friends of Over The River (FOR) also want to encourage you to not let up in your efforts. Even though the EIS is complete, Over The River still needs permits from Fremont and Chaffee counties. What happens during the next few months will be essential to making Over The River a reality. Information about the next steps of the local permitting process and ways to get more involved will be available at the receptions.

All supporters are welcome to attend, so please invite your friends and neighbors to help us commemorate this historic milestone!

Salida Reception

Wednesday, December 7th, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

SteamPlant Ballroom

We hope that you will join us in welcoming Christo back to our community as we celebrate the Over The River Record of Decision. Looking forward to seeing you there!

We can see that our economy has problems. Asking government to help solve these problems makes for abuse of power and well intentioned, inelastic macro actions with unintended consequences. The truth is, fair prices and jobs are found between individuals, with a unique understanding of their environment, who trade. In the United States we have the legal right to use the Dollar for trade, even though it is not the same dollar as spelled out in the constitution. (Please learn more about the dollar and it’s abuse by our Federal Reserve Bank.)

When individuals have easy access to value creation we can prosper. When we can easily put a product or time to market without the barriers to entry presented by government, we are free to find value/profits. (profits= product – costs). That “profit” is hard to come up with by central planning mandate or regulations that increase risk to the individuals pocket book with higher start up costs. Cultural Institutions decide how easy it will be for an individual to find value by productive interface with their environment. When individuals profit they save until they feel comfortable, then they spend. Savings encourages investment and people who have found a source of value take care of charity, and have money to pay taxes.

When individuals can conduct business with little regulation the consumer will be more careful who he or she buys from (encouraging local). Plus the saver is more careful in spending and will find experience and education rewards spending decisions. The laws that make us “safe” also make us lazy and dependent. These laws also provide barriers to entry and reduce competition.

Individuals are, or can be, innovative. What we need is a reduction in the regulations that complicate value creation and encourage stagnation. During the French Revolution too many heads were separated from the bodies of those who made the laws. Now maybe we can have an independence movement where unproductive laws are separated from the body of law that we agree to be governed by. After all, economies exist naturally before and without government, because individuals create value. The economy is the problem, free individuals are the solution.
