  Where: Salida Steam Plant Ballroom

Topic: Chaffee County Search and Rescue South**

We often read about hikers, climbers and outdoor recreationists who get into trouble in the high country or on the water and are rescued from precarious locations, sometimes injured - their lives saved by a Search and Rescue team.
The Central Colorado Humanists will explore the work of the Chaffee County Search and Rescue team of dedicated volunteers in the next Science Sunday presentation: “Chaffee County Search and Rescue - South,” June 3 at 10 a.m. at the Steam Plant Ballroom, 220 W. Sackett Ave., Salida.
More than 100 search and rescue missions are performed each year in Chaffee County - from lost hikers, injured rafters on the Arkansas River to searching for downed aircraft or missing children and elderly citizens. These volunteers are also involved with other varied activities including crime scene searches, wildland fires and natural disasters.
The men and women involved in these efforts are all volunteers, highly trained and motivated to serve in this self-funded organization that seldom receives the attention it deserves.
Bill Sample, an officer with Chaffee County Search and Rescue South, will speak about typical rescue missions, how the group is organized and funded and the art and science of search management and techniques as well as how local and external resources are utilized for this vital mission.
Sample is a retired electrical engineer, pilot and flight instructor using his passion for volunteer work, flying and outdoor activities with the Chaffee County Search and Rescue unit.
Participants will gain an appreciation for this organization and its life-saving work and a question and answer session will follow the presentation.
Central Colorado Humanists sponsors the Sunday Science presentations on the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free while donations to defer costs are always welcome, and light refreshments will be provided.
